WIPO IP Facts and Figures 2011

WIPO has recently published a compilation of Global Statistics with an overview of intellectual property activity from 2005 to 2009. WIPO IP Facts and Figures 2011, covers patents, utility models, trademarks and industrial designs and serves as a quick reference guide for IP statistics gathered from 90 IP offices around the world.

It shows that trademark applications - over 3 million filed per year since 2005 - is the most requested form of IP globally, however, between 20 to 35 percent were not granted. In patent applications (almost 2 million filed per year since 2005), the granted patents are only between 37 to 44 percent.

It also shows that the country with more patent applications filed in 2009 is USA (456,000), followed by Japan (349,000) and China (315,000). Regarding trademark applications, the top countries in 2009 are China (809,000), followed by USA (267,000) and India (142,000).
