Patents
Patents protect the invented elements, means, features, processes and methods that make things work. This lets inventors profit from their inventions.
There are application forms and fees, and because patents are complex, getting one approved can take several years. Patents can be renewed for a maximum of 20 years.
You can also request an Utility Model, which is very similar to the patent, but usually has a shorter term (often 6 or 10 years) and less stringent patentability requirements.
